We are living in the science fiction we grew up with
Thursday August 9, 2007
I just got an e-mail from one of my best friends, who profoundly stated:
I was removing my SD card from one slot and putting it in another,
when I realized this was shown on the original Star Trek over 40 years
ago. We are living in the science fiction we grew up with.
So true, SuperDataMan!! =:)
Interesting text:

Hm. I tried to reproduce this error but couldn’t. So, for the time being, I’ve just disabled the google-hilite plugin. =:/
There are more things than just gigabyte-sized cards that fit in one’s hand comfortably. Just think of mobile phones: you know Motorola called its StarTAC that way because of Star Trek communicators. And that was 10 years ago.
But here are the sci-fi technologies I’d like to see invented:
– stun weapons (we have “ray guns” already, but they are lethal)
– matter/anti-matter reactor (along with a source of anti-matter) or more efficient, like extracting energy from vacuum (ZPM)
– transporter (and, of course, all transporter operators must be called Scotty)
– faster-than-light travel (I’ll settle for B5 jumpgates or even Farscape starburst, but I’d prefer stargates or warp drive)
Hey Thiago! =:)
Yep, I totally agree with your list. The transporter would be, I think, the coolest, and also that which will most likely never be pulled off. I’d add:
– time travel (I’ve just gots to see me some dinosaurs and accidentally interrupt the space-time continuum!!)
– light sabers (hope to God it doesn’t accidentally twist on whilst in yer front pants pocket) =:)
I grew up in the 80’s, watching the Original Series and TNG. Everyone seemed to think that these things were so far out as to be impossible. But, I’ve seen in just twenty years the possiblilities that keep coming true. But, I still want my shuttlecraft already!
