Pirates of the Caribbean 3

I SO want to see this movie!

Stranger Than Fiction

I just got done watching this movie with my family and I can honestly say that this is one of the most amazing movies I have ever seen. The cast is perfect. Will Ferrell is absolutely incredible. Dustin Hoffman is excellent. Maggie Gyllenhaal is superb! The style of the film is just impeccable. I don’t think I’ve seen a movie so artfully directed, shot, and editted in a very long time. Amazingly good use of technology, overlays, and good old-fashioned camera work. Wonderful!! And the bitter-sweet emotional roller coaster was almost too much to bear.  I loved every minute of it! I realize that I’m coming across as more of a gushing, emotional school girl than a cool, sophisticated movie Read more…

Warning: a brain dump followeth: Blockbuster has sweetened their deal by allowing in-store trade-ins of online-rented movies. This, to me, blows NetFlix out of the water, since NetFlix does not yet have a brick-and-mortar presence anywhere (?). And, because we signed up with Blockbuster a while ago, we still get to keep our 2 free movie-or-game rental coupons per month too. Pretty cool! As a result, we’ve been watching tons of movies as of late, including the Indiana Jones trilogy (forgot how good they were!!). I’ve been a busy little beaver over the last few weeks, OSS-code-wise, anyway. Adriaan and I have whipped kpilot into shape proper-like, it seems. I’ve spent a decent chunk of time twice now and merged Read more…

UltraViolet

Just finally had the chance to see this tonight and I was very pleasantly surprised! I wasn’t honestly sure what to expect from the commercials, but it was much better-done and much less focused on over-the-top gore and violence than I had thought. Bravo to Kurt Wimmer for that!! And honestly, bravo to Mr. Wimmer for an incredibly well-thought-out, well-crafted, well-shot, well-cast, and well-executed piece of film. Amazing. Milla Jovovich was perfect in this movie too, I might add. And I’m not referring just to her beauty. She completely sold the part of Violet; and her grace, timing, and athletic ability were such that I have a hard time imagining anyone else pulling it off as well. Hm. For that Read more…

V for Vendetta

Wow. Movies always affect me more than they probably should. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, necessarily, but it’s definitely a thing. I just tonight had the chance to watch V for Vendetta. I’ve never read the graphic novel, and as such I came to the movie with pretty much no expectations and no history with the story line. I did read something somewhere that made me think that the story hinged on Natalie Portman’s character being raped, though, and I’m quite happy to find that it did not and that she was not. I’ll leave the story’s synopsis for those who enjoy such things are are better equipped for this one. But wow. Read more…

In The Last 48 Hours

I have had the pleasure(?) of living through the following: Getting two problems (ABS light and Airbag light were both stuck on) with our new-to-us 2005 Town & Country fixed only to find another problem (2 radiator fans refused to turn off when car was turned off). Had to disconnect battery overnight to turn off fans and prevent battery drainage. Took said vehicle back into the dealer who promptly and courteously fixed it. Again. Finding out that the family dog (who just yesterday started limping–refusing to set any weight on her left, front paw) has Lyme disease. $200+ later and doggie is now feeling much better, apparently. Beating head repeatedly against same problem at work for a week now is Read more…

Must Love Dogs is no Grosse Pointe Blank

My beautiful bride and I just finished watching Must Love Dogs. I am a huge John Cusack fan, as is Lynn. However, Must Love Dogs barely bubbled up above the “sure could have done something more enjoyable with the last two hours of my life” mark. It was a cute film, to be sure, and those involved did decent-enough jobs. Christopher Plummer was excellent, as always. It just seemed like it was a really long, drawn-out, wholly predictable, average romance movie (guys–read: “chick flick”). And this was no fault of John Cusack, honestly. I mean, really, it seemed like he was intentionally left out of most of the movie. And the ending, when they finally did realize that they loved Read more…

K-PAX

I think I’ve mentioned before how much movies affect me. They really do. And the really thought-provoking ones affect me the most. Duh, I suppose. I just saw K-PAX this evening. How I managed to miss this until just now is beyond me. Comes with the territory of having a hectic job, a beautiful wife, three amazing children, a very busy out-of-work schedule, outside-of-work hacking ambitions, and an Xbox, I suppose. Now, the film intentionally leaves you guessing as to what the problem is, to quote Mr. Lawrence (I LOVE that line!!). And it’s unnerving to me to walk away from a film without having a clear idea of what really happened in its imaginary universe. Vanilla Sky drove me Read more…

Batman Begins

My good friend Mr. Schindler just let me borrow Batman Begins from him and I took the time to watch it this evening instead of patching, sanding, painting, cleaning, organizing, and stressing. All I can say is WOW. Batman Begins is easily the best Batman movie ever. It is what Tim Burton was striving for, I really believe, in his first Batman with Michael Keaton. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the first one. The subsequent Hollywood offerings for the Dark Knight on the silver screen were… how shall I put it… utter crap, so I won’t comment as to their lack of merits. But Batman Begins was absolutely brilliant in its exploration of Batman’s beginnings, training, techno-arsenal, and psyche. Read more…

Firefly and Serenity

How, exactly, did I manage to miss this amazing-looking series from the recent past? And how did I manage to be completely oblivious about this equally-amazing-looking movie? Egads.
