Wanted: A WYSIWYG blogging tool for KDE

I would gladly pay for this, I really would. The best tool I have to use currently is BloGTK, and while it’s not bad, it doesn’t do WYSIWYG. The user (that would be me) has to click to insert the appropriate tags, etc., and that gets rather boring after… well, it’s boring. I found PyQLogger and it looks interesting, but as usual, all of the Python-dependencies aren’t to be found for my Fedora Core 3 laptop. Which reminds me, I’m starting to feel the itch to do a clean install on my laptop again, and I’m wondering if Kubuntu is worth trying out. Anyone have experience in the differences between Fedora Core 3 and Kubuntu?

Win4Lin 1.1 Pro

I hate to say this, but I am really disappointed with the Win4Lin Pro product. For those of you who don’t know what this is… it’s software that allows you to run windows programs in Linux. Well, to be fair, it’s more than that. Being that it’s built on top of qemu, it’s actually a full-blown PC emulator which happens to run Windows 2000 and Windows XP, etc. The reasons I’m disappointed with this new product from Win4Lin are as follows: It’s REALLY slow. REEEEEALLY slow. Vmware is about 20 times faster. I have been a Win4Lin customer for years, and their old Win9X emulator was REALLY, REALLY fast. Like, twice as fast as Vmware. I was really expecting to Read more…

The best laid plans are in my other pants

I just discovered the Newsboys’ Thrive CD, and I am really loving it. “Live in Stereo”, “Million Pieces (Kissin’ Your Cares Goodbye)”, “Rescue”, and “Cornelius” are absolutely brilliant, and have kept me rocking, smiling, and singing along on my drive to/from work for the last couple of days. I heartily recommend this CD to everyone, and will have to look into buying some more Newsboys CD’s now. I think my favorite song lyrically is “Live in Stereo”…. Feelin’ Blarghy

I am. I feel like I’m standing still when I should be running. I feel exhausted. I have little time and too much to do in it. Blargh. That’s about all I have to say about that.

“Frothing Crowd of Lunacy” … or “Why I spent $39 on Opera after 4 years of having used it for free”

In case you’ve been living under a rock, or working at some large, silly corporation that develops only for Internet Explorer, Opera has just released version 8 of their excellent web browser. You can check out what has changed yourself–I won’t bore you with the list. Again, in case you’ve been living under a rock, or working at… somewhere less than clueful… Opera is a standards-compliant browser, is feature-rich, fully skinnable, has an excellent e-mail program, does lots of Really Cool Stuff (TM), and in general, is the browser that I normally try to make Firefox mimic when I occasionally switch back and forth between it and Opera. The things that Firefox does well are largely things that Opera has Read more…

The sad state of music

I found this ExtremeTech article looking at where the state of the state is for online music. I was very impressed with the approach they took in the article. Most reviews like this are completely Microsoft or Apple-centric and ignore the fact that there is a large user community that refuse (or can’t afford) to use these two operating environments. Flexibility Where can you play your downloaded songs? Does the service offer playback support in digital media adapters (DMAs)? Can you play your tracks on other PCs on your home network? How to do server-side e-mail filtering with cpanel/exim

I finally figured out how to do this, YAY!! This forum entry has more details, and I’ll blog more about it later, especially once I get all of my filters set up. For the time being, I only have my kde mailing list e-mails being filtered. Hmmm. Cool!! This means that I don’t have to set up filters in all the possible e-mail programs that I want to use (the list contains Kmail, Opera M2, Thunderbird, and evolution currently). Oh, and as another aside… I simply cannot speak highly enough about Justin and vortexhost.com. I dealt with another web hosting company before and was totally frustrated from their support. If you’re looking for a REALLY good, inexpensive web host, you’d Read more…

Yet another PS1 DualShock Series-H hack

I’ve posted some new pictures from my latest mod. Thanks to John from modeverything.com, I’ve successfully modded a PS1 Series H DualShock controller for the brains of my second-player arcade stick controller. It was REALLY tight soldering, and I don’t claim to have done it well. In retrospect, I should have probably tinned the contact points on the PCB before I started, but the space was so tiny that I didn’t think I could. Anyway, now both arcade controllers have PS1 DualShock controllers for their internal circuit boards, and both work perfectly well with the PC games (PSX->USB Radio Shack converter) and the Xbox (Dreambox PSX->Xbox converter from LikSang.com). Whee!!

Updated arcade stick mod

So, I’ve done a bunch of research and question-asking and reading and cursing and gamestopping and some more reading and some more question-asking, etc. When I originally built my custom arcade sticks, I used the PCB’s from old PSX digital-only controllers, since they were the easiest to hack and solder. These worked really well for me (in combination with some PSX-to-USB converters I got from Radio Shack for $10) with PC games. Both Linux and Windows see the arcade sticks as regular joystick devices and they work perfectly fine with M.A.M.E. and the TOTALLY cool Killer Instinct emulator. Anyway, as I’ve blogged much about before, along came the Xbox and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection into my life and with it Read more…
